BS 9999:2008 Fire safety in the design, management and use of buildings

New Fire Code becomes reality.

After a long period in Development the long awaited BS 9999 will be effective from October.

The Standard effectively replaces BS 5588 parts 1-11and will become the main guide when designing the majority of buildings.

Following on from our seminars over the last two years the content of the BS will be familiar to our regular clients and I know we have found 9999 to be most effective in assessing risk at design stage and making the correct decision to not only meet the Building Regs but also in being inclusive to the intent of The Fire Safety order and the clients own risk assessments and level of management in occupation.

"The code is being heralded as a breakthrough, offering an advanced risk-based approach underpinned, for the first time, by fire engineering principles." Fire Risk Management, May 2008

"Those who are fully aware of 9999 will remain at the forefront in the service they offer." CIAT spokesman speaking in Architectural Technology, July/August 2008

"It will improve the ability of construction professionals to get key design decisions correct. The public will have an increased level of safety and clients will benefit from knowing where they stand on cost at an earlier stage of the design process."

"It makes the crucial link between safety and end use rather than just looking at the building itself. It is the only document which objectively assesses risk. 9999 has codified what Approved Design has been doing over the last decade prior to its publication. This has given us a greater ability to give clients the certainty they look for early in the design process. It is difficult to see how anyone involved in the fire safety design of buildings will be able to operate effectively without a good working knowledge of the document."

Andrew Kitching as quoted in Fire Risk Management, May 2008
